Entrepreneurship is central
to Vermont’s economic health. Entrepreneurs—people
who create and grow businesses—play a powerful
role in the economic well-being of rural communities.
Today 88 percent of all Vermont businesses have 5 or
fewer employees, and more people than ever are working
for small businesses in Vermont. Furthermore, small
businesses account for most of the job increases in
recent years. Innovations in technology and new opportunities
in service industries, tourism, retail and value-added
agriculture are giving rise to new micro and small businesses.
"Homegrown" entrepreneurial ventures represent
an important way to build and sustain the rural economy.
The week is one important way to raise the visibility
of entrepreneurship and the support services available
to those creating and growing businesses in Vermont.
