Kaleidoscope Art Supply is a creative haven for those who love art, make art, or simply want to engage with the community through an artistic lens.
Curator and artist Raven Crispino had always dreamed of opening a space where creatives come together to share their passion. She imagined a place where underrecognized artists can showcase their work, and where people can find high-quality art supplies. With that vision in mind, she decided to take the leap and turn her dream into reality.
Moving to Vermont from New Jersey, Raven set her sights on Rutland after she was warmly welcomed at several Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region (CEDRR) mixers.
Knowing that running a business was new territory for her, Raven followed the advice of the Rutland Redevelopment Authority and reached out to Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC) and her business advisor Nancy Shuttleworth for guidance.
“I am so fortunate to work with someone who is not only knowledgeable but also supportive and understanding,” said Raven. “Nancy listens attentively, offers thoughtful feedback and practical advice, and is genuinely invested in my success.”
“Raven is a pleasure to work with,” said Nancy. “She welcomes new information and immediately applies it to operate and grow her business.”
With Nancy’s assistance, Raven developed a business plan that outlined her goals, target market, and financial projections. The two also discussed the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where artists of all levels could feel comfortable and inspired.
“It’s my priority to create a space where people come together to celebrate the power of art,” Raven explained. “It’s about fostering a community of creative individuals.”
As the art space began to take shape, Raven moved forward to curate a collection of high-quality art supplies. She carefully selected materials from local and international artisans, ensuring that there was something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned professionals.
The charming location at 37 Center Street, second floor, has ample space to house material at the front, and in back, a gallery, art classroom, and artist studio. Visitors can explore an eye-catching eclectic array of artful soaps, candles, and accessories in addition to a vast selection of paint brushes, writing materials, and designer papers—all the things that bring delight to an art shop.
With the help of VtSBDC and her business advisor, Raven has successfully launched Kaleidoscope Art Supply. Since the May opening, the community has embraced the new business, and in turn, Raven has embraced the community. Kaleidoscope has become a popular destination for artists and art enthusiasts alike.
“I will continue to nurture and curate this space where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their artistic abilities,” Raven concluded. “There is no judgment here, just encouragement for people to explore their creativity.”
