Do you remember why you started your business? For many of us, those first ideas were fueled by aspiration—freedom, growth, income, impact. Whether you’re in your first few years or you’ve been at it for decades, it’s worth asking:
- Have you reached those original goals?
- Are you still moving toward them?
- Have you set new goals to keep your business evolving?
I’m reminded of the old saying: If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there. It’s worth pausing to make sure you’re not just on “any road.”
Here are a few quick checkpoints to ground your thinking:
- Year-end goals. Where do you want to land by December? Revenue, customer growth, product improvements—be specific.
- Your team. If you have staff, do they feel like a team working toward shared goals, or just a group of people doing tasks?
- Your customers. Beyond making purchases, are they satisfied? Have you checked in lately to ask what’s working—or what’s missing?
- Yourself. Are you giving yourself the space, energy, and support you need to lead effectively?
Even a short reflection on these questions can reset your perspective. You may spot opportunities you’ve been overlooking, reignite goals that slipped earlier this year, or simply recognize the progress you, your team, and your customers have already made.
