Car Repair, Reimagined: Auto repair specialist brings services right to the customer’s location
2 minute read

Living in Vermont typically means driving from here to there, and back again. Which also means that we depend on our vehicles to work when we need them. That’s what prompted auto repair specialist Allen Laberge and his partner Kayla Chabot to take their long-imagined idea and turn it into a business: Pro Mobile Automotive. Started in 2023 and located in Ferrisburgh, Pro Mobile serves customers from Milton to Middlebury, bringing a range of car repairs and services directly to the customer’s driveway or workplace.

“I had held on to the idea of a mobile repair service for quite a while,” Allen shared. “Kayla and I decided to take the opportunity to create something unique for our community.”

After growing up around heavy equipment and working on mechanics in the field, Allen calculated that mobile repairs are usually more cost effective than transporting disabled machines to a repair shop. Later in his career, Allen built engines for a rally team, gaining an understanding of complex mechanics and honing the impeccable attention to detail required for high performance autos. Those early influences, combined with experience as a dealership and classic vehicle technician, generated Allen’s vision of offering mobile auto repair to Vermonters.

“Imagine not having to bring your car in for repairs, or wondering if you should call a tow truck because your check engine light came on,” said Kayla. “We wanted to alleviate the stress of trying to coordinate a ride or taking time off work to have your vehicle serviced.”

Bringing their idea to fruition did not happen overnight. While Allen has vast expertise in auto repair, and Kayla has a background in finance and customer service, neither had ever started their own business. While they were opening their new business accounts, the bank teller suggested that they contact the Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC) for confidential, one-to-one, no-fee advising. They arranged a first meeting with their regional business advisor Sarah Kearns, and have since learned how to network, to find resources, and to create a stronger social media presence.

Sarah offered a range of resources from legal to marketing, all the components of starting a new business.

“Kayla and Allen are smart and creative,” Sarah commented. “They are eager for advice, and they run with it. Plus, they are really knowledgeable about their industry. Overall, they are the ideal clients, and they are also fun to work with!”

Allen and Kayla agree that they are on their way to achieving many of their goals. Their services have grown to include diagnostics, tune-ups, brakes, wheel bearing/driveline repair, performance upgrades, high performance vehicle service, classic/vintage complete vehicle service, custom accessory installation, pre-purchase vehicle check, charging system and battery replacement/repair, multipoint inspection, and more.

They say that they are grateful for VtSBDC and look forward to continuing to work with their business advisor.

“Sarah has been inspiring, encouraging, and resourceful,” said Kayla. “In addition to all the actionable recommendations she has provided, she has also encouraged us to be proud of every little step we take towards success.”
