Spring Cleaning — For Your Business

2 minute read

What does spring cleaning mean to you? Cleaning the car, airing out the house, clearing out things you haven’t used in years. Most of us have some ritual around the arrival of spring.

Your business needs the same kind of fresh air.

The new year is underway. Resolutions were made. Plans were discussed. Now is the right time to step back and make sure the foundation of your business is still working for you. Not in theory—today, in practice. Your building, your people, your numbers, and your agreements all benefit from a seasonal tune-up.

Think of this as a practical checklist. Each item is small on its own, but together they keep a business healthy.

The Toolbox — Your Systems
Why it matters: Systems that worked last year to solve emerging challenges, may now be slow, duplicated, or ignored.
Action: Pick one core process (billing, payroll, scheduling, inventory, job tracking) and ask: Is this still the simplest way to do this?

The Thermostat — Your Team Pulse
Why it matters: Morale problems rarely show up on financial statements until it’s too late.
Action: Have short one-on-one check-ins. Ask: “What’s one thing that would make your job easier?”

The Dashboard — Your Financials
Why it matters: Many owners look at numbers but don’t use them to make decisions.
Action: Review the last three months. Confirm you understand profit, cash flow, and where money is actually coming from and going to.

The Price Tag — Your Pricing
Why it matters: Costs creep up quietly. Prices often stay frozen.
Action: Review your top five services or products. Confirm margins still make sense after labor, materials, and overhead.

The Suggestion Box — Your Customers
Why it matters: Customers often know where your business can improve before you do.
Action: Call or email five good customers and ask one question: “What’s one thing we could do better?”

The Filing Cabinet — Your Contracts
Why it matters: Old agreements can lock you into outdated terms or risks.
Action: Review your standard contract or terms of service agreement. Make sure it reflects how you actually operate today.

The Front Door — Your Lease
Why it matters: Space needs change. Costs rise. Terms expire.
Action: Check renewal dates, escalation clauses, and maintenance responsibilities before they become urgent.

The Safety Net — Your Insurance
Why it matters: Coverage gaps are usually discovered after a claim.
Action: Ask your agent for a coverage review and at least one competitive quote every year.

The Broom Closet — Your Expenses
Why it matters: Small recurring costs quietly pile up.
Action: Scan bank and credit card statements for subscriptions, services, or vendors you no longer use.

The Calendar — Your Priorities
Why it matters: Busy schedules can crowd out important work.
Action: Block two hours this month for planning—not reacting.
